Substance Lock report
This is a local comparison. It cannot replace legal judgment, but it highlights wording changes that are particularly capable of changing a legal proposition.
What does the score mean?
90–100: high local fidelity. 75–89: review advised. 50–74: material review required. Below 50: substantial fidelity risk. The score is not a percentage measure of legal correctness. It measures wording-risk indicators between the original and the redraft.

Offline phrase library
Import phrasebooks, judgments, notes or other source material you are entitled to use. The app indexes the wording locally on your device. This is not AI-generated material: the source text remains linked to the file you imported.

Essay diagnostic
Analyse the current document before redrafting it. The offline diagnostic uses transparent rules; when Online AI is selected, you can request a deeper evaluative review through your secure endpoint.

Fidelity score
The score measures local wording-risk between Original and Working Draft. It is not a mark for legal correctness. A low score means the redraft deserves closer comparison.
- 90–100: High fidelity
- 75–89: Review advised
- 50–74: Material review required
- 0–49: Substantial fidelity risk
Protected anchors
Anchors include detected cases, citations, statutory references, CPR references, quotations, dates, figures and terms you have personally protected.
Improve: restore altered anchors exactly where they are substantively required.
Sensitive wording
Terms such as may, must, reasonable, material, establishes and suggests can alter the force of a legal proposition.
Improve: preserve the original degree of legal force unless you deliberately intend to change the argument.
Negation
Words such as not, no, without and cannot can reverse meaning.
Improve: treat any negation warning as a priority manual check.
Causation
Caused, contributed to, resulted in, linked to and associated with are not equivalent.
Improve: retain the same causal relationship as the original.
Degree of certainty
A redraft can become legally unsafe if cautious language is made categorical, or vice versa.
Improve: preserve expressions such as arguably, may, likely, must and establishes.
How to obtain a higher-fidelity redraft
- Work on one paragraph or proposition at a time rather than rewriting an entire essay at once.
- Use Conservative editing where legal precision matters most.
- Add important defined terms and specialist expressions to Writing profile → Protected terms.
- Check all cases, statutory wording, quotations, dates and figures before accepting a version.
- Resolve negation and protected-anchor warnings before lower-priority style warnings.
- Run Substance Lock again after manual corrections until the report reflects the intended proposition.
Essay-analysis measures
Authority markers
A local indicator of recognisable authorities and citations. A low count may mean important propositions need support; it is not a requirement to maximise citations.
Analysis markers
Flags language associated with evaluation, contrast and reasoning. Improve by explaining why an authority matters and how it affects the thesis.
Repetition
Highlights potentially repeated passages. Improve by combining overlapping points and keeping each paragraph focused on one function.
Question relevance
Compares paragraph vocabulary with the essay question. A low value is only a prompt to review whether the paragraph advances the central answer.
Application health check
Run these checks before important work. They test core browser capabilities, local storage and required app modules.
Saved work & history
Documents are auto-saved in this browser. Each document can also contain named snapshots so you can restore earlier versions.

Common questions
What does a low fidelity score mean?
It means the local comparison detected changes capable of altering meaning, such as missing protected anchors, changes to legally sensitive terms, negation, causation or certainty. It does not mean that only that percentage of the law is correct. Open Fidelity & learning for a full explanation.
How do I improve a fidelity score?
Restore protected anchors, check negation first, preserve the same degree of certainty and causal relationship, then use a smaller or more conservative redraft. Run Substance Lock again after each correction.
How can I check the app before important work?
Open Fidelity & learning and run Application health check. It tests the local database, storage, document APIs, required libraries, service-worker support, WebGPU availability and recent application errors.
How do accounts and passwords work?
When account authentication is enabled, use Account & security to sign out, change your password or request an email change. Password recovery is available from the sign-in screen. Google sign-in uses your Google account through the configured authentication provider.
Why can I not see an old .doc file?
Legacy .doc files are not safely readable in the browser. Open the file in Microsoft Word and save it as .docx.
Can I use the app without internet?
Yes, after the web app and local AI model have been prepared and cached on that device. Offline AI requires a compatible WebGPU browser.
Where are my documents stored?
By default they are stored locally in this browser on this device. Use Saved work → Backup all local data if you want a portable backup.
How do I build my phrase library?
Open Phrase library and import source material you are entitled to use. The source wording is indexed locally rather than invented by the app.
AI & application settings
Choose how generation works. Offline AI runs a small open-source model in your browser. Online AI sends only the text you ask to process to your configured secure server endpoint.
Offline AI
The local model is downloaded once and cached on this device. Model quality is lower than a large online model, but your text stays in the browser during generation.
Online AI
Do not put an OpenAI API key into this browser app. Use a server-side endpoint so the key remains private.
